In Loving Memory Of Frederick Eichrodt III:Retired Indianapolis Firefighters Has Passed Away

The Indianapolis Fire Department community mourns the passing of retired Lieutenant Frederick G. “Rick” Eichrodt III, who died on February 10, 2026. Born July 27, 1952, Rick dedicated over three decades of his life to protecting the city, leaving behind a legacy of steadfast service and cherished camaraderie.

Appointed on June 16, 1976 (Badge 794), Rick’s career was marked by dedication and versatility. He rose through the ranks from Firefighter to Chauffeur and ultimately to Lieutenant in 1986. His assignments took him across the city, from Snorkel 31 and Engine 07 to a long tenure as officer of Truck 04, later reclassified as Ladder 19. There, he also served on the IFD Hazardous Materials Decontamination team, showcasing his adaptability. He concluded his active service as the Tactical Support Unit 18 technician, retiring on December 30, 2008.

Beyond the fireground, Rick was the heart of his firehouse. He was renowned as a great station cook, nurturing the familial bonds essential to the fire service. His passion extended to his cherished hobby of restoring and collecting classic outboard boat motors. A recognized expert, he generously shared his knowledge, always eager to assist others with their projects.

Rick’s life will be celebrated on February 23, 2026, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. He is remembered not just for his official roles, but as a skilled craftsman, a helpful friend, and a dedicated brother to his IFD family. His story is one of quiet competence, warm fellowship, and a service life well-lived.
