Southeastern Indiana man was killed Sunday afternoon in a head-on crash in western Ripley County

HOLTON, Ind. – A 37-year-old Madison man died Sunday following a violent head-on collision with a commercial semi-truck on U.S. 50 in Ripley County.

According to Indiana State Police, the crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 50 and County Road 600 West, near the community of Holton. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a catastrophic scene: a passenger car overturned on the roadway and a commercial truck overturned off the north side of the highway.

Police identified the deceased driver as Tyler Dukes. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the commercial truck, 26-year-old Richard Murray of Spring Hill, Florida, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates Dukes was driving a 2008 Mercury Mariner eastbound on U.S. 50 when, for reasons still unknown, the SUV crossed the center line. It entered the path of a westbound 2022 Volvo semi-truck and trailer, driven by Murray. The vehicles collided head-on in the westbound lane.

The ISP Versailles District Crash Reconstruction Team has taken over the investigation. Toxicology reports for both drivers are pending as part of the ongoing probe to determine the exact cause of the fatal crossover.
